La Neveria to Latuvi – More Information

The hike from La Neveria to Latuvi takes place in an area of the Sierra Norte called the  Pueblos Mancomunados, located approximately 56 Km (35 miles) east of Oaxaca city. This is a region of communally-owned land shared by the residents of eight mountain villages. In recent decades a concerted effort has been made to conserve the forests and promote eco-tourism. All of the villages have a tourist office and cabins for overnight guests. There is a 60 pesos admission fee and visitors are encouraged to hire local guides for hikes or mountain bike rides on the trails that connect the various towns. Visitors are asked to dress in earth tones (green, brown and blue) and to avoid other colors, particularly bright ones.

The high country of the Sierra Norte catches moisture that flows in from the Gulf of Mexico, which produces lush vegetation in the cloud forests. A great variety of bromeliads, ferns, mosses and orchids grow wild in the woods. Visitors should be aware that it is usually about 20 degrees Fahrenheit (6.6 degrees Celsius) cooler in the mountains than in Oaxaca city, so taking a light jacket and gloves is recommended. Fog and drizzle are also common in the mountains in the mornings, even during the dry season, so light rain gear is also a good idea.

In hiking from La Neveria to Latuvi, you can expect to travel part way on little-used narrow roads, and spend some time following single track footpaths through the woods. Some of these paths will be on rather steep terrain. There is a log bridge in place where the trail crosses the Rio Guacamayas. GPS data  collected on a bike ride between these villages indicates we will cover a distance of 10.95 Km (6.8 miles), descending 539.5 meters (1770 feet) into the valley, then climbing 241 meters (790 feet) to Latuvi. The hike will begin at an elevation of 2737 meters (8980 feet) in La Neveria and conclude at 2450 meters (8037 feet) in Latuvi.
