Santa Ana del Valle – More Information

Santa Ana (also called Santa Ana Yaguiza) is a Zapotec community of approximately 1,000 people located about three miles north of Tlacolula and twenty miles east of Oaxaca city. Like most of the villages in this area, it has very ancient roots. There is evidence of a hilltop redoubt just outside of town, which may have been a ceremonial center (there may have been two small ball courts and ceremonial plaza there) or an area of refuge in event of attack. In any case, the hilltop affords a panoramic view of the city below and the Tlacolula valley stretching away for miles in the distance.

Our hike in the area will begin with a visit to the local community museum, which has a particular focus on the exploits of some of the local citizens during the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920. Then we will walk through town and climb the rather rough path up the hillside to the unexcavated ruins on top. The hike can be either an out & back trek or follow a loop, depending on the local guide – see maps, below.

Time frame: 8:30 depart Llano Park / 9:30 arrive museum in Santa Ana / 10:00 start hike / 12:00 reach top of hill / 12:30 start descent / 2:15 leave Santa Ana / 2:30 lunch at market in Tlacolula / 3:45 leave Tlacolula / 4:30 return Oaxaca
